As Halloween approaches, the Norfolk County Fire Department is reminding residents to keep fire safety top of mind – especially when decorating with candles and electrical displays.
Fire Prevention Officer Cory Armstrong-Smith says this time of year often brings hazards that aren’t part of people’s everyday routines.
He recommends avoiding real candles whenever possible, with lots of other options.
Beyond flames, Armstrong-Smith noted that electrical hazards have become a growing Halloween concern.
Modern displays with lights, inflatables, and sound effects can pose risks if not used properly.
So on Halloween night, especially with rain in the forecast, make sure everything is working the way it should be.
He also reminds houses that are handing out candy to make sure their front step is property lit so kids can see where they are going and further reduce risk of either tripping over electrical cords or coming in contact with a candle.
