Hold onto your helmets, the high school varsity football season is turning into a gridiron free-for-all!
Let’s start with a quick correction from last week’s huddle — the Pauline Johnson Thunderbirds haven’t quite punched that playoff ticket yet. The Wolves, Thunderbirds, and Bears are still duking it out for those final two golden spots under the playoff lights.
Speaking of the Bears, let’s talk about their return to the league. Prior to this season, the Valley Heights football team was on hiatus due to a lack of players. But this year, their roster was bolstered, and they were ready to play. So far, they’ve had a strong showing and have nothing to be ashamed of.
They entered this week’s matchup against the Wolves with a 3-2 record — not too shabby at all. Families packed the stands to cheer on their Bears, a true testament to the return of football at Valley Heights.
The Bears’ offense is a crafty one, mixing in reverses, double-reverses, and halfback passes to keep defences guessing. While they’ve struggled with their passing game and inside running, their defence has held firm.
They really needed a win this week against the Wolves to keep their playoff hopes alive — but Waterford came out like a pack, building an early lead. Valley Heights clawed back to make it close, but the Wolves held on for the 30–25 victory.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Raiders stormed into Cayuga, shutting out the Warriors 35-0 to stay undefeated.
In Simcoe, the Holy Trinity Titans finally struck lightning — zapping the Sabres 14-8 for their first win of the season. Over in Brantford, the McKinnon Park Blue Devils turned up the heat, out-scoring the Pauline Johnson Thunderbirds in a 43-34 offensive fireworks show.
Next week is shaping up to be a slobberknocker! Delhi and McKinnon Park square off for top dog status, while the Wolves, Bears, and Thunderbirds are locked in a three-way dance for the last two playoff spots.
Get your popcorn ready — this season’s going all the way to the whistle!
