Brantford Police are warning residents about a sophisticated phone scam that has already generated more than 100 reports in a single day.
The scheme involves caller ID spoofing, where fraudulent calls appear to come from the Brantford Police Service’s own non-emergency number, and in some cases, display the name “Brantford Police Service.”
Victims reported that the scammers identified themselves as detectives, falsely claiming the individual was a suspect in a fraud investigation.
Police stress that these calls are fake and are not being made by officers.
As a reminder, all legitimate outgoing calls from Brantford Police show up as “No Caller ID,” and officers will never demand personal or financial information over the phone.
Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, especially seniors and vulnerable community members who are often targeted in scams.
Anyone unsure about a call is advised to hang up immediately and call the non-emergency line at 519-756-7050 to confirm whether an officer is trying to reach them.
