Communities across Brant, Haldimand, and Norfolk will gather today to mark World Suicide Prevention Day with events aimed at raising awareness and offering hope.
Ceremonies were held in Brantford and Paris, while local organizations hosted walks, community barbecues, and grief support sessions.
Residents were also encouraged to light candles at 8 p.m. to remember loved ones lost to suicide and show support for survivors.
The theme of this year’s events is “Igniting Hope,” emphasizing the importance of connection and community action in preventing suicide.
Health officials note that approximately 4,500 Canadians die by suicide every year — about 12 lives lost daily — but say these tragedies are preventable.
They are urging residents to learn and share the number for Canada’s new suicide crisis helpline, 9-8-8, which offers free, confidential support by call or text 24/7.
Advocates say making the helpline widely known can help save lives by ensuring those in crisis have immediate access to support.
With education, open conversations, and community involvement, organizers hope to reduce stigma and build stronger networks of care.
