Norfolk County is voicing deep concern after a string of thefts from cemeteries across the region, including stolen bronze and memorial items.
In a statement, County officials praised the Ontario Provincial Police after a proactive patrol at Waterford Greenwood Cemetery earlier this week led to an arrest and the recovery of stolen property.
A 39-year-old Oxford County man is now facing multiple charges, including theft, mischief, and possession of stolen goods.
The County says monuments and memorials remain the property of families, stressing that thefts of this nature are not only crimes but acts that impact grieving loved ones.
Norfolk is also reviewing and updating its Cemetery Bylaw to align with provincial standards, aiming to strengthen protections and preserve the dignity of local burial grounds.
Residents are reminded to report any suspicious activity around cemeteries to OPP or Crime Stoppers.
