Grand Erie Public Health has confirmed the first laboratory case of influenza A for the 2025-2026 respiratory season. The case signals that the flu is now circulating in the community, months ahead of the usual October start of flu season.
Last year, 608 confirmed cases were reported across Haldimand, Norfolk, Brantford, and the County of Brant. Health officials are urging residents to take precautions, noting the flu is a serious illness that affects the respiratory system and can last longer than a common cold.
“The flu can be severe and even life-threatening for vulnerable members of our community, including infants, older adults, and people with chronic health conditions,” said Dr. Jason Malenfant, Acting Medical Officer of Health.
Free flu shots will be available across Ontario, starting in early October for high-risk individuals and for all eligible residents by the end of October.
