John Sinkowski and his daughters Carrie and Katie
For nearly half a century, John Sinkowski has been the beating heart of Stoney’s Home Hardware in Port Dover. What began as a dry goods shop over 70 years ago evolved into a community staple—the hardware store is a place for storytelling, problem-solving, and building community. For 50 years, its now self-proclaimed MacGyver—Sinkowski—has done everything from assembling barbecues to fixing bikes and advising DIYers. He fondly reminisced about working alongside his daughters and recalled simpler times, when the store and inventory weren’t computerized.
A special celebration was held at Stoney’s on Tuesday to honour Sinkowski’s career in the hardware industry. Southwestern Retail Sales and Operations Manager Jim Grein presented Sinkowski with the Home Hardware Golden Hammer Award. Surrounded by coworkers, family, and friends, Sinkowski reflected on decades of change, family ties, and community spirit.
From bizarre repair questions to unforgettable customer stories, the job always kept him curious. His passion? Helping people solve problems. Sinkowski shared an anecdote about a woman with a clogged toilet—her husband had decided the best way to unclog it was to heat it up… with charcoal.
Now working only two days a week, he remains a pillar in a town that’s changed—but has never forgotten its roots. Congratulations John!
