Port Dover’s Dan Johnson is pedalling through intense heat and steep climbs as he takes on the Live Like Luke: Canadian Crossing — a cross-country cycling journey in honour of his late son Luke. Now more than halfway through British Columbia, Johnson says the first leg of the ride has been both physically demanding and emotionally rewarding.
He adds that the back roads are constant ups and downs. Johnson says he has managed to stay hydrated, fuelled, and focused, but the heat has been steady.
Following his day of rest Johnson will tackle the most challenging stretch yet: Rogers Pass from Revelstoke to Golden.
Johnson, who describes himself as highly social, has been energized by meeting fellow cyclists along the way. “It’s the people who keep me going,” he said. Riders have joined him for parts of the journey, providing encouragement and companionship. He told us about Jenica who was inspired to chase her own goals.
Back in Norfolk and Haldimand, local support for the Live Like Luke campaign is growing fast. Community members have been spotted wearing campaign shirts, signs are up around town, and donations are already approaching $50,000.
Johnson says this early momentum is just the beginning. “I believe we’ll hit a tipping point soon — something that really helps this message spread across the country.”
With every push of the pedals, Johnson carries Luke’s legacy forward — reminding others to live with purpose, passion, and connection.
