The Port Dover Cemetery is marking a major milestone this year with its 150th anniversary, and the public is invited to a special celebration on Saturday, June 14 at 1:00 p.m. at the cemetery grounds.
Hosted by the Port Dover Cemetery Company, the event will showcase newly restored historical artifacts, including the original cemetery ledger, minute book, and map from 1875—documents that offer a rare glimpse into the community’s past. Kim Schott, chair of the celebration, says she is pleased to share these significant items with the public.
The artifacts were carefully restored with support from the Port Dover Foundation and the Port Dover Lions Club.
Schott explains that the day will include a commemorative ceremony led by the Legion Pipe Band, along with a special reading.
She added that the board will also share updates and stories about the cemetery’s history. The event will conclude with a guided walking tour, highlighting historical facts, artifacts, and the gravesites of Port Dover’s founding families.
Schott emphasized the importance of preserving the cemetery, which has remained independent and volunteer-run for 150 years.
The event is free and open to everyone. Organizers encourage the public to take part in this rare opportunity to explore Port Dover’s rich heritage and honour the community’s past.
