The Ontario government is cracking down on school boards following what it describes as serious failures in accountability and spending.
Education Minister Paul Calandra outlined several concerns the province has had recently regarding how school boards are managing their finances during a press conference.
The province has appointed a supervisor to oversee the Thames Valley District School Board after conducting a review in the wake of a staff retreat to Toronto that cost approximately $40,000.
Calandra then turned his attention to the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board and the much-discussed trustee trip to Italy.
Regarding the local board, he has ordered that they repay the full cost of the trip, in addition to $100,000 spent on art.
He also announced new oversight measures.
Calandra said the dysfunction shown by these boards reveals a clear disconnect from the real needs of Ontario families.
