The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has issued a Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook due to the high risk of spring flooding.
With an above-average snowpack across the watershed, there is concern that a sudden thaw or heavy rainfall could lead to significant runoff and flooding.
Additionally, while ice coverage is lower than in previous high-risk years, there is still a moderate risk of ice jams forming, which could further increase flood potential, especially in areas prone to such events.
Lake Erie’s ice cover heightens the risk of ice-jam-related flooding at the Grand River’s mouth.
GRCA reservoirs are currently at normal operating levels and will be managed to mitigate downstream flooding.
Residents in flood-prone areas should review their municipal flood response plans and prepare for possible evacuation.
The public is urged to exercise extreme caution near rivers and waterways, as slippery banks and cold, fast-moving water pose significant dangers.
Parents are advised to keep children and pets away from the water’s edge. The GRCA will continue to monitor conditions and issue updates as necessary.
This statement remains in effect until March 31, 2025.
