Canada’s premiers will meet virtually with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today (Dec 11) to address potential U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated that he looks forward to discussing Canada’s negotiation strategy.
This meeting follows a session two weeks ago where Trudeau and the premiers examined U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s warning of a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico. Ford mentioned that the federal government had promised to present a plan during the upcoming talks.
The proposal is expected to focus on strengthening borders and meeting Canada’s two-percent NATO defence spending target by 2032. Trudeau recently met informally with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate to discuss trade and border security.
On social media, Trump mocked Trudeau as “Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada,” hinting at a joke about making Canada the 51st state. Trump’s proposed tariffs aim to curb illegal border crossings and drug trafficking.
