Bird enthusiasts and nature lovers are gearing up for the annual Christmas Bird Count hosted by Birds Canada. This nationwide event, North America’s longest-running citizen science program, invites participants of all skill levels to document bird species in their area. Dr. Matt Fuirst, Manager of Bird Observatory Operations thinks this is a great opportunity for someone just getting into birding.
For those near Norfolk County, Dr. Matt told us how you can get involved locally.
The event takes place on December the 14th at Long Point Bird Observatory on Front Road in Port Rowan. Dr. Matt says teams are organized with all levels of experience to divide and conquer. There is also an opportunity for kids to take part.
The observatory’s ongoing efforts at Long Point include migration monitoring, bird banding, and public outreach. This year alone, over 20,000 birds were banded across three research stations.
Anyone interested in getting involved in the Long Point Bird Observatory, or the Christmas Bird Count, can reach out to Birds Canada via email hello@birdscanada.org.
