The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) West Region, along with the Traffic Safety and Marine unit, has launched the ‘Drive Smart: Keep It Safe’ campaign. The initiative, running from September 23rd to 29th, focuses on tackling stunt driving and illegal vehicle modifications across Southwestern Ontario.
Stunt driving, which includes speeding and aggressive maneuvers, endangers everyone on the road. Illegally modified vehicles can also compromise safety by impairing visibility and control, increasing the risk of accidents.
This comes after two vehicles were stopped for reckless speeds on Highway 59 last week – one clocked at nearly 200 km/h and the other over 180 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. The drivers were a 17 and 18 year old. Both lost their licenses, had their vehicles impounded and face court dates.
As part of the campaign, OPP officers will increase patrols and inspect vehicles for illegal modifications. Drivers caught engaging in stunt driving or operating unsafe vehicles may face heavy fines, points on their license, or vehicle impoundment.
The OPP emphasizes the importance of education and enforcement to reduce dangerous behaviors on the roads. They urge the public to report unsafe driving and work together to create safer roadways.
“Your vigilance can save lives. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone,” said Inspector Mike McConnell, OPP Traffic and Marine Program Manager.
