This past Wednesday the The Norfolk County Public Library (NCPL) hosted a public unveiling of a new Teen Art Mural at the Delhi Branch.
This mural is part of a larger project designed to engage young community members in a positive and creative endeavour, enhancing public spaces. This is the first of five unique murals, and it reflects the diversity and aspirations of the youth in our community.
Shannon Ringrose coordinated the project and the six artists that would work on it. Ringrose commented that she was thoroughly impressed by their enthusiasm and commitment. She also added that she was proud to celebrate these six role models and their impact on the community.
We had an opportunity to speak with the artists and learned that prior to beginning the mural none of them really knew one another.
A collaborative piece such as this takes planning, and apparently that was the most time-consuming phase.
The teens put a lot of thought into the meanings behind the symbols chosen for the final piece.
The six artists are Kaydence Dusome, Samantha (Sammy) Rixmann, Jenna Ryerse, Ava Bailey, Pauline Alblas and Kaylie Lee. In a written statement they add that they wanted to do a mural together because they felt it was an opportunity to liven up a community area. Some themes they wanted to include were education, community connections, creativity and belonging.
Julie Kent, CEO of Norfolk County Public Library had this to say regarding the project and the mural itself.
The next time you stop by the Delhi Branch of the NCPL take a moment to admire the mural in the quiet study room. A wonderful testament to youth and the community.
