The former Mayor of Haldimand County and the last candidate to run for the Progressive Conservatives in the last election is speaking out about the current political landscape and the dangers of social media.
Ken Hewitt has been reading lots of things online and is noticing that a lack of reliable news sources on platforms like Facebook are creating bubbles for groups and individuals to rise up.
Hewitt is concerned with when this kind of information enters into the political world.
Accusations and assumptions are thrown out quickly.
Hewitt is concerned that this type of behaviour could have a negative effect on politicians who are want to do something they know is the right decision but know it won’t be popular.
Hewitt has heard his name said frequently as of late as the discussion of the MZO and Nanticoke is brought up once again.
As Mayor, he advocated for this development and is seeing that public anger boil over once again despite that fact that it is something that was widely considered a good move to those behind the scenes.
That fear stems from the 40,000 people predicted to come to this proposed development.
Hewitt said those people are coming no matter what.
He said issues like MZO and online rhetoric has already lead to a divide in power that should not be.
