Canada’s population of people 85 years of age and older is expected to triple over the next 50 years.
Statistics Canada said in its projections released Monday that the country’s population could reach a medium-growth forecast of 63-million by 2073.
It says the aging population and low birthrates mean that migration will be the key driver of Canada’s growth — and newcomers can help in areas where workers are most needed.
Ottawa demographer Doug Norris says the baby-boomer demographic will double the pressure on the labour market because while they are aging out of the workforce, they are also aging into needing seniors’-care services by younger people.
