Norfolk County may be set to strengthen their relationship with the Indigenous nations and community in 2024.
Tuesday at council, Councillor Tom Masschaele put forward a motion that council adapt an Indigenous acknowledgement that would be read at the start of council meetings and other special occasions.
The draft wording is below, though the motion was sent back to staff to be officially looked at in the new year.
“The municipality of Norfolk County recognizes the historical and current contributions of Indigenous Peoples throughout Canada, and particularly in Norfolk County that have added to the rich cultural and social fabric that exists today. Recognizing the important contributions of Indigenous peoples is consistent with our commitment to making the promise of Truth and Reconciliation real in our communities. We wish to continually strengthen and develop the spirit of cooperation and collaboration to the mutual benefit of all residents of Norfolk County.”
