One day Public Relations Officer Nancy Kimmins was walking through the clubroom when one of their members suggested to her that she should start manning the Port Dover Legion’s Facebook page. She agreed, and she had her own ideas about how their page should be ran.
If you scroll their Facebook, you’ll see that they are supporting Veterans and the community, and that they are having lots of fun doing it.
What she is doing is clearly working: their page is now reaching more viewers than ever before.
And she makes sure that it stays fun by having a system in place so that she isn’t always scrambling to get things posted, while ensuring that people keep coming back for more.
They also have an Instagram account, but when asked about the possibility of adding a TikTok account, Kimmins laughed and told us that we likely won’t be seeing the Legion doing any TikTok dances anytime soon.
Since the new Executive took on their roles at the Legion in 2019, fun has been top of mind for those responsible for keeping the Legion running and keeping people coming in the doors.
Port Dover Legion President Walter Breen tells us how they hit the ground running in that department.
And just like how revolutionizing how they engage with social media has worked in their favour, so has the addition of fresh and fun events like the abovementioned live music entertainment.
There are certain days of the year aside from Sundays that you are sure to find bands playing at the Port Dover Legion.
Another event that has been very good for the Port Dover Legion attracts much of the same crowd as Locals Night and Friday the 13 and was a huge success this past summer.
You can read about how they used some of the funds raised through their Bike Nights here
While they accept members of all ages and backgrounds, they are particularly keen on attracting one demographic of members and volunteers that will help ensure the future of the Legions.
Members and volunteers help keep the Legion going, but everyone can assist in that by attending the events the Legion hosts.
And it is teamwork that helps them pull off a full roster of events, with the Ladies Auxillary stepping up to the plate every month to help out.
President Breen points to one very important piece of the puzzle when it comes the great things the Legion does for Veterans, and for the community.
Not only do they want the community to come out as members, volunteers, and supporters of their events; but they also hope to see you at Powell Park on Saturday November 11th.
