Phillip Scherle had barely gotten his feet wet in running a small business before Small Business Week arrived, but much like he has hit the ground running as the new owner of Little Johnny’s in Jarvis, he was quick to jump on the opportunity to chat with us.
Since taking over the business on October 2nd, Scherle has been busy getting to know everyone.
When it comes to his number one biggest fans though, they’re a little closer to home as he has become even more of a hero to his three kids.
Between being up at the crack of dawn every day to get the shopping done and the pizza dough for 40 pies started, he is definitely noticing that time is something every small business owner could use more of.
As for whether he plans to make any changes, he follows the age-old adage of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”.
He does plan to add his own flavour to the already successful recipe that is the staple restaurant at the corner of 3 and 6, but he knows that that will take some time to get set up.
In addition to working towards adding delivery and later hours, as well as increasing their social media engagement, Phillip would love to connect with local farmers and bring the community and local food closer together.
Community is very important to Scherle, who moved here from Hamilton just over 10 years ago and having worked as a chef in many places. They have noticed big differences, with one of the biggest being that in smaller towns people actually stop and talk to one another. For him as a business owner, it is very important that they keep not only the great food but also the community mindedness of this restaurant at the crossroads of 3 and 6.
Phillip has some advice for anyone considering making the leap to becoming a small business owner.
