The Norfolk County Sports Hall of Recognition has announced its Class of 2022.
Shane Bergman and Shirley Shaw are the newest inductees.
Bergman spent seven seasons in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders before retiring in 2021.
He was part of the Grey Cup winning team in 2014 and 2018, and named to the West Division CFL all-star roster in 2019.
Shaw has been serving as head coach for the Simcoe Seals Special Olympics swim team for over 20 years.
In that time she has seen the number of swimmers rise from nine to over 40.
Besides swimming, Shaw also introduced a number of other sports to local Special Olympics athletes, including basketball, floor hockey, snowshoeing, and golf.
Shaw was named Special Olympics Ontario Female Coach of the Year in 2016. She received the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers from the Governor General of Canada in 2017, and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation in 2019.
The 2022 class will be recognized at the induction dinner in 2024.
