It looks like more townhouses are coming to Waterford – and residents may not be too happy about it.
Last night at council, in a vote of 6 to 2 – it was approved that 24 townhouse unit and a commercial property will be coming to the Yin Subdivision area along Old Highway 24.
Growth in Waterford, especially in this area, had been a big election topic and Ward 7 councillor Kim Huffman did not vote in favour of the move.
She noted that Waterford is already low on available commercial space, and this development would take up more land that was already designated for commercial use.
During the meeting last night, John Vallee did argue to this point – saying the developer was worried about having a larger commercial space on the property than what is already planned.
He noted the Robinson building in Simcoe and the many empty spots, saying there is worry they may not be able to rent out the space.
When speaking with myFM, Huffman believes the residents will end up appealing the decision with LPAT.
She added that she understand growth happens to every community, but she wants to make sure Waterford is prepared for the growth and would like to see a secondary plan for the area before even more development is brought in.
Ward 1 councillor Tom Masschaele was the other vote against the proposed development.
