Haldimand Norfolk MP Leslyn Lewis is calling for action from the federal government as planned job cuts at Stelco create uncertainty for local steelworkers and their families.
Stelco’s plans could affect up to 500 workers across its Hamilton and Nanticoke operations. The company plans to idle finishing operations in Hamilton and move more production to Lake Erie Works, with reports suggesting up to 80 jobs could be affected in Nanticoke.
Lewis says the impact could be felt well beyond the plant.
“When someone’s job is at risk, so is their ability to pay the mortgage, buy groceries and plan for the future. That uncertainty affects the whole family.”
Lake Erie Works has operated in the community since 1980, providing skilled jobs and supporting local businesses across Haldimand-Norfolk.
Lewis says she has written to Industry Minister Mélanie Joly asking what job protections were secured when Cleveland-Cliffs purchased Stelco and whether those commitments are being met.
The federal government says Cleveland-Cliffs made binding employment commitments when it acquired Stelco two years ago. Joly has given the company another 15 days before potentially pursuing legal action.
Lewis says those commitments need to be enforced.
“A promise offers little protection unless the government is prepared to enforce it.”
Lewis says she will continue pressing Ottawa for answers and action to protect workers at Lake Erie Works as the community waits to learn the full impact of Stelco’s plans.
