Libraries have long been associated with quiet spaces, bookshelves and reading, but the Norfolk County Public Library wants residents to know they are much more than that — and they’re worth speaking up for.
This is Ontario Public Library Week, with this year’s theme, Loud for Libraries, encouraging people across the province to recognize the important role libraries play in their communities and advocate for their continued success.
Belinda Smith, Virtual Library Coordinator with the Norfolk County Public Library, says the annual celebration is part of Canadian Library Month, which takes place every October.
Organized through the Ontario Library Association, the week provides an opportunity for libraries to highlight their services, connect with residents and remind people of the value they bring to communities of all sizes.
This year’s celebration also comes at a particularly important time.
The Loud for Libraries campaign encourages residents to consider how they can support their local branches.
Smith says every voice matters when it comes to maintaining strong, responsive library services that meet the needs of the people they serve.
That includes making sure residents understand just how much their libraries have to offer.
While borrowing books remains an important part of the experience, Smith says libraries provide resources and services for people at virtually every stage of life.
From young children and families to seniors and those experiencing difficult circumstances, libraries offer accessible spaces where people can learn, connect and find support.
She says community involvement is important because people may not always recognize the value of a public institution until it is no longer available.
Beyond encouraging advocacy, this year’s theme also challenges the traditional image of libraries.
Norfolk County Public Library operates five branches across the county’s large geographic area, offering opportunities for residents to participate in conversations, educational activities and community programming.
Libraries also serve as spaces for creativity, connection and civic participation, bringing together people from different backgrounds and generations.
For Smith, that broader community role is an important part of what Loud for Libraries is intended to celebrate.
The campaign is not simply about encouraging people to visit their local library more often.
It is also about recognizing libraries as institutions that contribute to the social, educational and cultural well-being of their communities.
