The North Shore Highlanders are looking to grow their ranks, and no musical experience is required.
The local pipe band is holding an open house today, (September 29) at 6:45 p.m. at the Port Dover Legion, giving people a chance to try the pipes and drums, meet members and learn what joining the band involves.
Piper Jocelyn Evans says newcomers are welcome to give it a try, with the band currently especially interested in adding drummers.
Evans joined after moving to the area and looking for something new to do. With Scottish roots and a musical background, she decided to try the pipes and quickly found a community. She admits it requires a small commitment.
The roughly 30-member band practices Tuesday nights in Port Dover and performs at community events throughout the year.
Fellow piper James McKnight joined through his family connection to the band and says learning the pipes takes patience. New musicians begin on the chanter before moving to full bagpipes.
The Highlanders are particularly hoping to attract younger musicians, but beginners of different ages are welcome to come out, ask questions and see whether piping or drumming might be for them.
Along with learning music, newcomers will get a chance to discover the friendships and sense of community that come with being part of the band.
