Norfolk County residents looking to get rid of large household items can take part in the County’s Bulky Item Pick-Up Program next week.
The program runs from August 31 to September 4, with appointments required and available through ServiceNorfolk.
Residents can book an appointment online, by calling ServiceNorfolk at 519-426-5870 or 226-NORFOLK, extension 0, or by visiting a Customer Service Desk in Simcoe or Delhi.
The cost is $40 per pickup, including tax, and payment is required when the appointment is booked. The fee is non-refundable.
Loads are limited to approximately two cubic metres — roughly the size of a pickup truck box — and individual items can be no longer than 10 feet. Items must also be able to be lifted by two people.
Residents must have their items at the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of their scheduled pickup week. Collection can take place at any point during that week.
What can be picked up?
Accepted items include many large household articles, including:
- Stoves, microwaves, dishwashers, washers and dryers
- Refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and freezers
- Sofas, couches, desks, chairs and tables
- Rugs, patio furniture, bedsprings, mattresses and bed frames
- Bathtubs, toilets and sinks
- Water heaters
- Bicycles
- Barbecues, provided the propane tank has been removed
- Other large household items
- Carpet or pool covers that are rolled and tied, up to four feet by two feet
Freon-containing appliances, including refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and freezers, must have an Ozone Depletion Prevention tag attached to be collected.
What isn’t accepted?
The program does not accept commercial, agricultural, construction or industrial materials, as well as a number of other items.
These include wood, lumber, drywall, concrete, bricks, fencing, decking, windows, doors, siding, asphalt, stone, earth, ceramic tile and other construction or demolition materials.
Organic waste such as trees, stumps, leaves, branches, animal carcasses and feces is also not accepted.
Other prohibited items include automotive parts, farm machinery or equipment parts, fuel oil tanks, items containing gasoline, drums, fire barrels, electronics, tires and hazardous materials such as motor oil, paint, solvents, propane tanks, fertilizers and pesticides.
Regular recyclables such as glass jars, paper and cardboard are also not eligible for bulky item pickup.
