The City of Brantford and Six Nations of the Grand River have signed a new agreement aimed at working together as thousands of acres of land are developed in the years ahead.
The Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU, establishes a framework for collaboration on future development within Brantford’s Boundary Lands.
The roughly 7,563 acres were transferred from the County of Brant to Brantford in 2016 to accommodate future residential, employment and economic growth.
As development moves forward, Brantford and Six Nations have agreed to work together on issues affecting the lands where Six Nations has identified interests.
A major part of the agreement is the creation of a Six Nations Community Prosperity Fund. The fund is intended to provide a way for Six Nations to share in the economic benefits generated by future development within the Boundary Lands.
Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis called the agreement an important step forward in the city’s relationship with Six Nations, saying it creates opportunities for prosperity while respecting Six Nations’ history, rights and interests.
Six Nations Elected Chief Sherri-Lyn Hill said the agreement recognizes the community’s longstanding connection to the lands while creating a framework to share in future development opportunities.
The MOU is an agreement in principle and is expected to serve as the foundation for future agreements as development moves ahead.
