Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady says she remains firmly behind plans for a major energy project at the Nanticoke Industrial Park, while urging the province to ensure the public has a meaningful voice in the process.
In a statement, Brady said she has spent the past four years working alongside Haldimand Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley to promote Nanticoke as the right location for future electricity generation. She argued the site is better suited for industrial growth and well-paying jobs than a large residential development.
The province recently announced $500,000 in growth and readiness funding for Haldimand County to study future electricity generation options at the 900-acre Ontario Power Generation site. Possibilities include nuclear, hydrogen and natural gas projects.
Brady welcomed the investment but said any decision must be made openly, with strong public consultation to earn the community’s trust.
She also criticized Energy Minister Stephen Lecce for not answering questions about whether a large residential development should be built alongside heavy industry and future energy generation.
Brady added she hopes the province rejects Empire Homes’ request for a Minister’s Zoning Order, saying Ontario should not pursue two conflicting visions for the same site.
