As summer reaches its midpoint and the countdown to the first day of school begins, many children are already thinking about new backpacks, fresh school supplies and getting ready for September. This year, the Salvation Army in Simcoe is adding even more excitement with a new Back-to-School Supplies Party.
Instead of simply handing out pre-packed backpacks, families will be invited to shop for free and choose the backpack and supplies that best fit their needs. The event will also include board games, video games and a build-your-own ice cream sundae station.
Lieutenant Josh Edwards recalls the excitement of buying back-to-school supplies and getting ready for the school year ahead.
He added that letting children choose their own supplies helps make back-to-school feel special while easing some of the anxiety that can come with returning to class.
Lieutenant Chesney Edwards said, the party atmosphere lets them get to know who they’re helping.
She explains that the event gives volunteers time to connect with families and learn if they need additional support.
The Salvation Army expects to provide about 150 backpacks this year thanks to ongoing support from United Steelworkers Local 8782, community donations and provincial partners.
Registration is open through the Salvation Army office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Families must register in person, and distribution parties will take place on August 24 with afternoon time slots available.
The Lieutenants both said donations of backpacks and school supplies, especially for teenagers, as well as new indoor shoes for children in Kindergarten to Grade 5 and school-safe snacks, are welcome.
