Residents across Norfolk County, Haldimand, and Brant are being reminded to take precautions as a heat warning and local heat alert continue.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has maintained its yellow-level heat warning, while the Medical Officer of Health for Grand Erie Public Health says the heat alert remains in effect until conditions improve.
Heat alerts are issued when forecasts call for at least two consecutive days with daytime highs of 31 C or higher and overnight lows of 20 C or warmer, or humidex values reaching 40 or above.
Health officials warn that prolonged heat can increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly for older adults, infants, young children, people with chronic health conditions, outdoor workers, individuals experiencing homelessness, and anyone without access to air conditioning.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, stay in cool or air-conditioned spaces, limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, wear lightweight clothing, and check on neighbours, friends and family members who may be more vulnerable. Officials also remind everyone to never leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles.
