The inaugural Murals & Music Festival has been hailed as a success, with organizers already looking ahead to making it an even bigger annual celebration in downtown Simcoe.
The event drew hundreds of visitors with live music, guided mural tours, family activities and the unveiling of a new public mural, all aimed at showcasing downtown as a vibrant cultural destination.
The Downtown Simcoe Business Improvement Area (BIA) said one of the biggest successes was the support from local businesses. Riversyde 83 and Joy Bakery Cafe played a major role by hosting unique programming that kept visitors engaged throughout the day.
“This was Year 1, and you always want to be ambitious with Year 1,” BIA organizers said. “What really struck us was how our businesses stepped up.” They added they hope even more businesses will join next year’s festival and see it as a chance to reimagine their spaces and create new experiences.
The guided mural walking tours also exceeded expectations, especially among younger visitors. The festival demonstrated that Simcoe is well suited for the kind of cultural programming often associated with larger urban centres.
“People are seeing downtown differently,” organizers said. “They’re seeing the possibility.”
Another highlight was the unveiling of the new “Greetings from Downtown Simcoe” mural by artist BlazeWorks at the corner of Kent Street South and Peel Street. The BIA said the mural has received an overwhelmingly positive response and credited consultant Andrew Gunn’s experience in bringing cultural investment to communities with helping elevate the project’s vision.
They believe the festival has laid the foundation for an event that will continue growing and help redefine downtown Simcoe for years to come.
