Simcoe Little Theatre is inviting actors to audition for its upcoming production of No Exit, a dark comedy by French philosopher and playwright Jean-Paul Sartre.
Directed by Alex Barnard, the one-act play follows three strangers trapped together for eternity in a room that gradually reveals itself to be hell. While the original script is a single act, the local production will include an intermission.
Barnard said she has wanted to direct the play for nearly six years and was drawn to its emotional tension and complex relationships.
Written during the final years of the Second World War, Barnard believes the play’s themes remain relevant today.
The production will remain set in the period following the Second World War rather than being modernized.
Auditions will take place June 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Simcoe Little Theatre. Barnard said the production team hopes to attract performers interested in a darker and more challenging theatrical experience than a typical musical or comedy.
The production is expected to offer local audiences a rare chance to experience one of theatre’s most influential existential works, while giving actors the opportunity to explore complex characters and themes that remain relevant decades after the play was first written.
