Canada’s men’s national soccer team made history yesterday (Thursday) with a dominant 6-0 victory over Qatar at the FIFA World Cup in Vancouver, earning the country’s first-ever men’s World Cup win.
The impressive result sparked celebrations across Canada as watch parties erupted following the final whistle. More than 52,000 fans packed the stadium, while thousands joined the Voyageurs supporters group for the traditional “last mile” march before kickoff, creating a sea of red through downtown Vancouver.
The win puts Canada in a strong position to advance beyond the tournament’s group stage and has fuelled excitement among supporters nationwide.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and FIFA president Gianni Infantino were among those in attendance for the historic match.
The celebration was tempered by a serious injury to Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné, who broke his left leg during the second half and is expected to undergo surgery.
Carney later addressed the team in the dressing room, praising the players’ resilience and character while acknowledging Koné’s injury after Canada’s memorable World Cup victory.
