Norfolk County Committee of Council has voted to maintain its current approach to alcohol service at municipally approved outdoor cultural and community events, rejecting a new provincial option that would allow bring-your-own alcohol (BYOA).
During its June 11 Council-in-Committee meeting, members supported a staff recommendation to keep existing rules in place rather than permit attendees to bring their own alcohol to eligible public events. Staff reviewed the province’s recent changes and concluded that BYOA could increase the risk of over-consumption, impaired driving, and enforcement challenges while reducing oversight at licensed events.
Under the current system, alcohol service at approved events continues to be managed through provincial permits and designated controlled service areas. County officials said this approach provides a safer and more controlled environment for organizers, volunteers, and attendees.
The decision would not affect existing fundraising activities, including licensed beer gardens operated by service clubs and community organizations, which can continue under current provincial regulations.
The recommendation will now move to Norfolk County Council for final approval at its June 23, meeting.
