The annual SueFest A Celebration of Life fundraiser is returning to Brantford on June 20, bringing together live music, food and community spirit while raising money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
Now in its 12th year, the event was created in memory of Susan Maher and has grown into a popular summer tradition. Jamz Maher, co-founder and Susan’s son, said what began as a way to honour his mother has become something much bigger.
Co-founder Aleta Berec said Susan was a talented musician who loved bringing people together and SueFest reflects that spirit.
This year’s festival features two-time Juno winner Jack de Keyzer, Brant Parker Blues Band, The Nerds, Tim Turvey and The Three Avocados and reggae group Foundation Steppas, creating another diverse lineup of entertainment.
Maher said the festival has always embraced a wide variety of music and that’s part of what makes it special.
Berec and Maher say the event would not be possible without the support of community sponsors, including The Keg Steakhouse, Zander’s Fire Grill and Brew Lounge, Zehrs on Fairview Drive, and Streef Produce Ltd., along with many other local partners who help bring SueFest to life each year.
Berec encourages both returning visitors and first-time guests to come out and be part of the celebration, saying, “Bring your smiles, your energy and a lawn chair.”
SueFest takes place Saturday, June 20, at the Knights of Columbus in Brantford. Parking is free, and early bird tickets are $20 online at SueFest.ca or at the Knights of Columbus. Admission increases to $25 at the gate, while children 12 and under are admitted free.
