Four individuals are facing impaired driving-related charges after a series of separate investigations conducted by the Norfolk County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police over the weekend.
The charges stem from four unrelated incidents that occurred between the evening of Saturday, June 6, and the early morning hours of Sunday, June 7, in communities across Norfolk County.
The first incident occurred at approximately 7:12 p.m. on June 6, when an OPP officer conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Queensway East and Norfolk Street North in Simcoe. During the investigation, police determined the driver was impaired and took the individual into custody without incident.
As a result, a 26-year-old from St. Catharines has been charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, as well as failure or refusal to comply with a demand. He is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Simcoe on June 30.
Just minutes later, at approximately 7:28 p.m., another traffic stop was initiated on Hillcrest Road in Simcoe after an officer observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. Following an investigation that included a roadside sobriety test, the driver was arrested.
A thirty-nine-year-old man from Oxford County has been charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit and having liquor in an open container in an unauthorized place. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 21.
Later that evening, at approximately 11:12 p.m., police received a 9-1-1 call regarding a suspected impaired driver in the area of Erie Boulevard and Hastings Drive in Long Point. Officers located the vehicle near Langton and, following an interaction with the driver, made an arrest without incident.
As a result of the investigation, a 31-year-old from Aylmer has been charged with failure or refusal to comply with a demand. She is also scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Simcoe on July 21.
The fourth incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on June 7 while officers were responding to a disturbance call at a property on Windham Road 13 in Simcoe. While travelling to the scene, officers observed a parked vehicle on Thirteenth Street West near the reported location.
After speaking with the driver and conducting a roadside sobriety test, police took the individual into custody.
An eighteen-year-old from Haldimand County has been charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit, novice driver blood alcohol concentration above zero, young driver blood alcohol concentration above zero, and operating a vehicle while holding a Class G1 licence without a qualified accompanying driver. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 21.
The OPP continues to remind motorists that impaired driving remains a leading cause of preventable collisions and fatalities on Ontario roadways. Police encourage members of the public to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1.
“Everyone has a role to play in keeping our roads safe,” police said. “If you suspect a driver is impaired, call 9-1-1 immediately. Your call could save a life.”
All charges have not been proven in court, and the accused are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
