The Long Point Ladies Ducks Unlimited committee is inviting residents to lace up their shoes and help support local wetlands at this year’s Duck and Run fundraiser on June 20.
The annual 5K event welcomes participants of all ages and abilities to the scenic Long Point area while raising money for local conservation projects.
Acting Chair Stephanie DeMeyere said the Long Point Ladies’ Ducks Unlimited committee is hosting its fourth annual Duck and Run this year, with the event growing significantly since it first launched.
The event has outgrown its previous location and will now be held at Burning Kiln Winery, offering more space for runners, walkers and parking. Organizers expect well over 100 participants after starting with just 15 people during the first event in 2023.
Demeyere said the relaxed atmosphere makes it perfect for everyone.
Sponsor Chair Darcy McWilliam explained this fundraising is making a difference for the Long Point and Port Rowan area, helping preserve important habitat for migrating birds and wildlife.
Both women agree fundraisers like this are making a lasting impact that they have seen firsthand.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the 5K starting at 9 a.m. Participants can also enjoy a wine tasting following the event.
The Long Point Ladies Ducks Unlimited committee also holds a unique place in Canadian conservation history as the first women’s Ducks Unlimited committee in the country and the only all-women’s committee still active in Ontario.
“It’s something we’re very proud of,” McWilliam said, noting the group’s unique place in Ducks Unlimited Canada’s history.
