Norfolk County has received an application seeking to repeal the heritage designation for a historic downtown Simcoe property located at 45 Peel Street.
The property, situated at the corner of Peel Street and Kent Street South, is currently protected under By-law 81-26, which designated the building under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act in 1981.
According to Norfolk County, the building was recognized for its significance as an example of early 20th-century institutional architecture. Originally constructed as Simcoe’s Post Office and Customs Offices, the structure first opened to the public in January 1910.
Over the years, the building has been adapted for different uses while retaining much of its exterior architectural character.
The current application seeks to repeal the designation by-law entirely, which would remove the building’s municipal heritage status.
Residents and interested parties can submit written comments or objections within 30 days of the public notice publication date beginning June 4.
Additional information is available through Norfolk County planner Andrew Wallace, while comments can be submitted to the County Clerk’s Office.
A printed public notice is also expected to appear in the June 4 edition of the Norfolk and Tillsonburg News.
