MP Leslyn Lewis is calling on the federal government to remove all federal taxes on fuel, saying rising costs are putting pressure on families, especially in rural communities.
In a Friday release from her office, Lewis said many residents in Haldimand–Norfolk are struggling to afford both gas and groceries. Speaking in the House of Commons, she pointed to growing financial strain on families who rely on their vehicles for daily life.
Lewis noted fuel prices remain high and food inflation continues to rise, with some essentials like fresh vegetables increasing by about eight per cent.
She said the issue is more serious in rural areas, where there are few transportation alternatives. Without public transit, residents must drive to work, school, and stores, making fuel costs unavoidable.
Lewis is urging the Liberal government of Canada to eliminate federal fuel taxes for the rest of the year to provide immediate relief, adding she will continue advocating for solutions to ease affordability pressures.
