Concerns are being raised over a major federal infrastructure loan following recent committee testimony in Ottawa.
Haldimand–Norfolk MP and Shadow Minister of Infrastructure Leslyn Lewis is calling for more transparency after a $206 million loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) was approved for a Nova Scotia wind farm project linked to former Liberal MPs.
Lewis says Canadians expect taxpayer-backed financing to be based on merit, without political influence.
She also pointed to concerns from constituents and local business owners in Haldimand–Norfolk, who often face higher borrowing costs and stricter lending conditions.
Lewis questioned when the CIB became aware of political connections tied to the project. Officials confirmed those links were identified during due diligence before the loan was approved.
She also pressed officials on whether the loan carried a below-market interest rate, but they declined to provide details.
While supporting infrastructure investment, Lewis says public confidence depends on fairness and transparency, adding she will continue pushing for answers at committee.
