Norfolk County is gearing up for a full-throttle day of hits, jams, and high-speed action as Scrimmapalooza rolls into town, bringing more than 120 roller derby skaters from across Ontario.
The tournament, hosted by the Norfolk Knockouts, is the first of its kind in Canada. Skaters from cities including Windsor, Niagara, Hamilton, and Sault Ste. Marie will take part.
But this isn’t your typical matchup. Scrimmapalooza throws the playbook out the window, mixing skaters into brand-new teams based on skill and position – a little shake, rattle, and roll on eight wheels.
Angela Caswell, president of Norfolk County Roller Derby – better known on the track as “Booty Vicious” – says the sport is picking up speed across the province.
Caswell launched the Norfolk Knockouts back in 2016 after stepping away from the sport and feeling that itch to get back in the game.
Caswell said little compares to lacing up, calling the experience on the track “freeing.”
The event will feature eight mixed teams, with medals awarded for top finishers and individual honours like MVP and Most Heart.
Scrimmapalooza takes place March 28 at the CIBC Auditorium. Doors open at 9 a.m., with $20 tickets giving fans a full day of hard hits, fast-paced jams, and an evening after-party.
