A Waterford resident is working to revive Scouting in the community and is calling on local volunteers to help make it happen.
Matthew Metcalfe, who grew up in Scouting himself, says he hopes to launch a new Cub Scout group in Waterford as early as this fall if enough adult volunteers step forward.
Metcalfe first joined Scouts in 1988 as a Beaver and stayed involved through Cubs, Scouts and Ventures until heading to college in the early 2000s. He says the outdoor adventures and life lessons left a lasting impact, especially since he was never particularly drawn to organized sports growing up.
After moving to Waterford about two and a half years ago, Metcalfe realized the town no longer had an active Scouting group. When his son became interested in joining Scouts, the family began attending the First Simcoe troop. Metcalfe soon stepped in to help as a volunteer leader, saying it reminded him of how his own father helped out with the program when he was a Scout.
The immediate goal is to launch a Cub Scout group for youth aged 8 to 10, with hopes of expanding to additional levels in the future. Metcalfe says he also sees a strong opportunity to reconnect the program with community partners.
However, he says the biggest challenge right now is finding enough adult volunteers willing to step forward as leaders. Metcalfe says being a part of Scouting as a leader is deeply rewarding. He reflected on moments like camping trips and watching beautiful sunsets in the wilderness.
No previous experience is required to volunteer. Scouts Canada provides training and support for new leaders.
Metcalfe says if enough volunteers come forward, the new group could begin meeting in Waterford starting in September. Those interested are invited to join 1st Waterford Scouting on Facebook.
