The Medical Officer of Health for Grand Erie Public Health has issued a Cold Notification for the Grand Erie region, effective February 23rd.
The notification applies to Brantford-Brant and Haldimand-Norfolk and is triggered when temperatures are expected to fall below -15°C or when wind chill values reach -20°C.
The alert will remain in place until public health officials issue a formal cancellation.
Health officials warn that extreme cold can pose serious risks, particularly for individuals who spend extended periods outdoors or who lack adequate clothing, shelter or heating.
Exposure to frigid conditions can lead to hypothermia, frostbite and frostnip, and can worsen chronic medical conditions such as heart and respiratory disease.
Residents are encouraged to limit time outdoors and take frequent breaks inside warm buildings.
Dressing in several layers, covering exposed skin and wearing waterproof boots are key protective measures.
Officials also recommend drinking warm, caffeine-free and alcohol-free fluids to prevent dehydration.
Community members are urged to check in on older adults and vulnerable individuals during the cold spell.
Those travelling should ensure they carry an emergency kit in their vehicle in case of delays.
More information on cold-related illness prevention is available through Grand Erie Public Health’s website.
