The Ontario Provincial Police is investigating a series of extortion cases across southwestern Ontario, including incidents impacting residents and business owners in Norfolk County.
Since 2024, OPP West Region has identified 10 cases following a similar pattern of threats and demands for money.
These cases are in addition to more than 50 extortion investigations currently underway in the Caledon and Dufferin detachments.
Police say victims in Norfolk, Brant, Middlesex and Wellington counties have received threatening phone calls and text messages demanding large sums of money.
In many cases, callers appear to have knowledge of the victim’s home address or workplace, increasing fear and intimidation.
Investigators believe members of the South Asian community may be specifically targeted in some instances.
Authorities have also investigated several weapons-related incidents where properties sustained damage due to gunfire.
While no injuries have been reported, police believe these shootings are connected to the threatening communications and extortion attempts.
According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, extortion involves unlawfully obtaining money, property or services through coercion.
Police say perpetrators often rely on high-pressure tactics designed to frighten victims into immediate payment.
The OPP is urging anyone who receives a threatening call or message to report it immediately.
Residents are advised not to respond to the caller, not to send money, and to block the originating number.
Police also encourage victims to reach out to trusted contacts or victim services for support.
OPP West Region continues to investigate under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.
A poster with a QR code has been released, allowing the public to securely upload video footage or photos that may assist investigators.
Anyone with information is asked to contact their local OPP detachment.
