Diane Buckborough says volunteering with Special Olympics Simcoe has been one of the most rewarding parts of her life.
Buckborough has been an official registered volunteer for 15 years and serves as a community co-coordinator, swim team manager, and data administrator. She first became involved more than two decades ago through her daughter, who competes in bowling and swimming. What began as helping out at events soon turned into a long-term commitment.
She says one of the greatest rewards is watching athletes grow in confidence, try new sports, and build friendships. From swim meets to tournaments that include overnight trips, Buckborough has seen athletes step outside their comfort zones and celebrate personal milestones.
While local programs are close to full, she says more volunteers are always needed to maintain safe athlete-to-coach ratios. Even helping at a single event can make a difference.
Buckborough encourages anyone considering volunteering to give it a try, saying it not only supports athletes, but strengthens the entire Simcoe community.
