The Medical Officer of Health for Grand Erie Public Health has issued a Cold Notification for the Grand Erie Public Health region, including Brantford–Brant and Haldimand–Norfolk, effective December 31.
The notification is triggered when temperatures are expected to fall below –15°C or when wind chill values reach –20°C or colder. It will remain in effect until conditions improve and a formal cancellation notice is issued.
Health officials warn that extreme cold poses serious health risks, particularly for those spending extended periods outdoors or those without proper shelter or heating.
Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures can worsen chronic health conditions and may lead to frostbite, frostnip, or hypothermia.
Anyone experiencing symptoms such as numbness, confusion, or uncontrolled shivering is urged to seek immediate medical attention.
To stay safe during extreme cold, residents are encouraged to limit time outdoors, take frequent breaks indoors, and dress in multiple layers with wind- and water-resistant outerwear.
Covering exposed skin, wearing insulated footwear, and drinking warm, non-caffeinated beverages can help reduce risk.
Officials also urge residents to check in on seniors and vulnerable individuals and to keep emergency supplies in vehicles when travelling.
