Norfolk County residents are being urged to use caution today as Environment Canada forecasts a combination of strong winds and potentially icy conditions across the region.
The weather system moving through southern Ontario is expected to bring hazardous conditions from early this morning through this evening, with impacts ranging from difficult travel to possible power outages.
Environment Canada says southwest winds are expected to gust up to 90 kilometres per hour throughout the day, with the strongest gusts anticipated near the Lake Erie shoreline. These winds may be strong enough to cause downed tree branches, blowing debris, and localized utility outages.
Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items such as holiday decorations, garbage bins, and patio furniture to reduce the risk of damage or injury.
In addition to the high winds, rapidly falling temperatures following the passage of a strong cold front may lead to icy and slippery surfaces this morning.
Roads, sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots could quickly become hazardous as temperatures drop below the freezing mark.
Motorists are advised to slow down, increase following distances, and allow extra travel time, while pedestrians should take care on untreated surfaces.
Officials warn that the combination of high winds and icy conditions could increase the risk of accidents, particularly during the morning commute and along exposed rural roads and lakeshore areas.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring Environment Canada alerts and forecasts throughout the day.
