Canada has reported its largest population drop on record, mainly caused by a major decline in temporary foreign students and workers.
Statistics Canada said yesterday (Wednesday) the national population fell by 76,068 people, or 0.2 per cent, in the third quarter of this year.
The Ontario government says it is prioritizing international students in programs tied to in-demand jobs as federal caps on study permits tighten again in 2026.
The province is allocated 104,780 Provincial Attestation Letters, translating to a cap of 70,074 international study permits – a 42 per cent reduction from last year.
Minister Nolan Quinn says Ontario is focusing on workforce-driven programs while continuing to work with colleges and universities to deliver world-class education.
The province is also investing nearly $1 billion to expand seats in high-demand fields like construction, nursing, teaching, and STEM.
Canada’s population now stands at 41,575,585 as of October 1st.
