The Medical Officer of Health for Grand Erie Public Health has issued a Cold Notification for the region, which remains in effect as dangerously low temperatures persist through tthis week.
The notification applies to Brantford–Brant and Haldimand–Norfolk and is triggered when temperatures fall below -15°C or when wind chill values reach -20°C, creating an increased risk of cold-related illness.
Health officials warn that prolonged exposure to extreme cold can pose serious dangers, particularly for individuals who spend extended periods outdoors or who lack adequate clothing, shelter, or heating.
Cold weather can worsen chronic health conditions and may lead to hypothermia, frostbite, or frostnip if precautions are not taken.
Residents are encouraged to limit time outdoors when possible, dress in multiple layers, cover exposed skin, and check in frequently on older adults and vulnerable individuals.
Officials also recommend keeping emergency supplies in vehicles and seeking immediate medical attention if signs of cold-related illness appear.
The Cold Notification will remain in place until conditions improve and a cancellation notice is issued by Grand Erie Public Health.
