The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) warns residents to stay off frozen rivers, lakes, and reservoirs due to unstable ice conditions caused by early snowfall and fluctuating winter temperatures.
While ice is forming in some areas, variable flows, currents, wind, and snow cover make ice surfaces unpredictable and unsafe for recreational activities like skating or ice fishing.
The GRCA advises parents and caregivers to keep children and pets away from shorelines and frozen surfaces, emphasizing the risk of slips, falls, and accidents near fast-moving water.
Select conservation areas, including Belwood Lake, Guelph Lake, Pinehurst Lake, and Shade’s Mills, are monitoring ice conditions and may allow ice fishing if it is deemed safe; residents are encouraged to check current activity status and municipal recreation options for safe outdoor winter activities.
